No Video or Audio, Fan Does Spin

Post by Ferrous » Tue Jul 21, 2015 1:18 pm

Hi all, I ordered a Megadrive v3 and a Wasp from badassconsoles.com on June 12th. Installed it the following weekend and everything has worked great up until this last weekend. I get no audio or video on screen, the orange gamecube power light does turn on, no light on the wasp, and the fan does spin. I tested with other A/V cables and power supplies, no change. I have disassembled the gamecube and checked my connections to the megadrive and the wasp, all looks good to the eye. I am including a picture of the power circuit for visual aid. I have now disassembled the gamecube down to the power circuit and tested the fuse (circled in yellow) next to where the power feeds into the gamecube. I am receiving 12 volts across the fuse. I also visually inspected the caps on the board. I do not notice any bulging or bloating or anything that points to a cap failure. Next to the fuse is a 22-pin connector (circled in red) that joins the power circuit board to the motherboard. Can anyone assist me as to where I should test for power next? I suppose I could find another same model gamecube and start swapping boards out but what fun would that be right? I will be most gracious for any assistance or schematics anyone may have on the gamecube. Cheers!

Does the heatsink get warm at all ? If the orange LED turns on you have at least 3V working. Check out viewtopic.php?f=26&t=665 for a pinout of the power header.

Thanks for the link Streetwalker! I found the pinout from your link and will test the voltages. I will update my findings here when this is done.

Streetwalker, I tested the voltages coming out of the power header, no 5v on either pin. Is there any repairing this or am I replacing the power circuit board? Any clues as to what would have blown this? If I am replacing can you recommend any reputable parts sellers? Thanks for your help

I thought I burned out my motherboard with megadrive v5 installed. So I sent it to mega to be reworked but when he got it in the mail it was fine. It was that power reg same problem as you fan no video/sound but I had no power light ether.

agree, sounds like it could be the powerboard...but how did you measure voltage?

did you measure for 5v with the powerboard connected to the mainboard
or
was the powerboard disconnected from the mainboard and you tested for 5v solely at the powerboard?

I had originally measured it with the powerboard connected to the mainboard. After reading your question I disconnected the mainboard and measured from the powerboard. All voltages are good from the powerboard. I then reseated the mainboard to it and all of the voltages are now reading correctly through the mainboard. Reseating the mainboard helped with this. I then pieced everything together and still have the same results: fan on, orange power light on, no audio/video, no light on the wasp. I once more verified my voltages through the mainboard connector to the powerboard. They all check out. Where would be the next place to measure power up the line? I really appreciate everyone's efforts in troubleshooting this!

Today the heat sink is warm to the touch with the system on and I measured 3v & 5v coming from the regulator on the Megadrive v3. Still no audio/video or light on the Wasp. Can anyone tell me how to test for power on the Wasp? If the Wasp is bad would that prevent any audio/video?

Does the gamecube boot if you remove the megadrive ? If it does it will give you an error since you don't have a dvd drive attached, if it doesn't it's not the wasp nor the adapter and you most likely fried your mainboard.

Thanks for your speedy response Streetwalker. No the Gamecube does not boot with the megadrive removed. I have access to some other gamecube mainboards but do not know if they are the same model as this one. Does that matter or are they interchangeable?

They're interchangeable as far as drive replacements are concerned. You should also try this same motherboard with a different power board, just to make sure it's really not a power issue.

I swapped out the questionable mainboard and power board for a newer model mainboard that had an integrated power board. Everything now works again! I want to test the questionable power and mainboard at a later time. I'm just curious which one actually failed. Cheers to everyone for their help!
