PAL to NTSC conversion
PAL to NTSC conversion
Has anyone ever tried this before? I mean, I know it's possible to put an NTSC-U/NTSC-J switch in, so I would guess that a cube's region is determined by the IPL. If that's the case, would it be possible to transplant a pair of NTSC IPL chips onto a PAL motherboard, and have it function as an NTSC unit?

Hey man,
Just buy an NTSC mainboard from BadAssConsole for like $10. Or use RGB scart with your current PAL cube which doesn't care about PAL or NTSC

NTSC GameCubes do not output RGB from the analogue output.

Re: PAL to NTSC conversion
I have an NTSC model on the way, I also have a couple of PAL models. I just wondered if it was possible. Mega, do I get to pick a DOL-001 or DOL-101? Also, am I correct in assuming that IPL v1.0 now functions with a Wasp with Swiss?

Re: PAL to NTSC conversion
So I transplanted both MX chips from an NTSC cube to a PAL one, and harvested the crystal oscillator from the NTSC cube as well and wired it to the relevant pins on the MX chip, and lo and behold it now functions exactly as an NTSC cube, would you believe it. So in case anyone is wondering, yes, it's possible to transform a PAL cube into an NTSC one.
Re: PAL to NTSC conversion
Does it play NTSC games without any modchip ? NTSC-J ?
Re: PAL to NTSC conversion
It plays NTSC games just fine, I haven't tried NTSC-J. I would imagine that can be achieved with the switch method as per any normal NTSC cube, though. The only problem with it is that, similar to modding a PAL Sega Mega Drive to output 60Hz, composite video output is now in black and white due to the different colourburst timings between the two video formats. But hey, who uses composhit video anyway?
Re: PAL to NTSC conversion
I use it because that's all my monitor supports for now (unless I get HDMI/VGA). Anyway this mod is not really useful if you have a modchip. Also I'm pretty sure PAL consoles can't be modded with the U/J region switch, but that's addressed by Swiss anyway.
Re: PAL to NTSC conversion
Can Swiss force 480p on a PAL console?
Re: PAL to NTSC conversion
It can force PAL games to 480p and play NTSC games in native 480p on any console.
Re: PAL to NTSC conversion
What about a PAL console? Can Swiss, say, from a Wasp play NTSC games on a PAL console, in 480p60?
Re: PAL to NTSC conversion
Yeah same thing happens to NTSC cubes in 50Hz mode. A component cable or similar bypasses the issue of course.Xaranar wrote:It plays NTSC games just fine, I haven't tried NTSC-J. Presently Gamecube has no mod between color formats that's documented enough for other modders to repeat and received consensus as working.
