WASP Fusion Trouble (and MegaDrive v4)

Post by orcish_tinkerer » Mon Apr 25, 2016 1:09 pm

Hey everybody,

I've been looking for a way to add a WASP Fusion to my Gamecube build without losing functionality of the DVD drive. I know that Megalomaniac made the MegaDrive v4, but it doesn't look like he sells it anymore.

1. Is there another option other than MegaDrive v4?
2. Does anyone have an extra MegaDrive v4 that I can purchase?

The BIG question is this: I see an FFC slot labeled "DVD" on my WASP Fusion, but every single other build I see that uses the WASP/WiiKey Fusion has left it blank. WHY? I can't seem to find out why!?? lol

Not everyone is keeping the original drive in function, when using wasp/wkf/wode. That's probably the reason why the DVD ffc slot is unused. If you are good at soldering, you could solder everything without an adapter board.

Can I run an FFC cable from the WASP to the SD card slot while simultaneously running an FFC cable from the WASP to the GCN optical drive? And if so, why is something like the MegaDrive v4 needed?

Can you see where my confusion is coming from? lol :P

The megadrive is the connection (adapter board) between the gamecube mainboard and the WASP. This is necessary since the WASP is a Wii Disc Drive replacement. The Wii has a different Drive connector than the GC.
I assume at some point it will be possible again to buy a MegaDrive.
Here is the original thread from Ashen, where he explains how to solder the stuff. You don't need an adapter board then, if you're using his method.

I've read that guide, but #2 is a bit confusing to me. It reads "If you want to retain the ability to hook the original GameCube DVD drive back up you may solder to the DVD connector pins on the bottom of the GC motherboard (only one can be hooked up at a time!). If you plan to remove the connector a desoldering iron is recommended." Does that mean that the drive itself can't be plugged into the GCN when wanting to use the SD card... or can everything be hooked up as normal, just make sure that an SD card isn't plugged into the slot when wanting to use the optical drive? Thank you for the clarification.
