Wii DVD/Wiikey Fusion/WODE + GC Portable Discussion
Re: Building a portable GC: Need options other than DVD
O.K.... So, I've gotten the "crazy taxi bootloader" to load twice more after much messing around. It seems to be just a timing thing, like I need to plug the sun in at the exact moment its expecting something. Both times it loaded the bootloader this time I can confirm that it did not hang. I was able to hit the "a" button and the console would reboot at which point the sun would not load the game again. Also even though the HDD has some GC games on it they do not display in the bootloader.
The other odd thing is that in the PC programmer I have the sun set to "boot from PC selection" I have the region set to USA and in the other little options box I have "region lock" checked. Its a bit odd that no matter what game on the HDD I set it to boot from the programmer tool it loads the bootloader. Wish I had one of those little nero programmer USB things so I could upgrade this things firmware. It may behave differently if it were upgraded.

Re: Building a portable GC: Need options other than DVD
It's probably just using timing to catch the commands on the Wii like when to reset/etc. going to try a wode asap:)

Re: Building a portable GC: Need options other than DVD
Anyone who is planning on doing this mod please post your drive info here and I will try to keep a list updated somewhere... just in case we run into any incompatible chipsets/drive revisions. I don't think we should run into trouble but you never know. Drive identification can be done here: http://www.wiidrives.com/list thx SS. Also if you have any GC/Wii modchips to try that are confirmed working with your drive model please try them. So far my Viper Extreme (GC modchip) and D2lite (Wii modchip) have been incompatible running backups. Thx.
Re: Building a portable GC: Need options other than DVD
Iv been researching the very same thing!
And have been following the different the “Handheld” GameCube projects for some time now.
But I would love to see an actual “Portable” GameCube so that I could play Zelda or the Resident Evil Remake on the tube!
This seem to be the best example of a handled GameCube so far.
But it’s not potable!
http://forums.benheck.com/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=36826
Like you said we need to lose the DVD Drive!
So far iv found this;
The SunDrive
Lets you run ISO games off a Laptop size harddrive
http://www.modchipstore.com/sundriver-16485.html
And the WiiKey Fusion mod Chip look promising!
http://www.modchipstore.com/Wiikey-Fusi ... 16480.html
It says and I quote,“Wiikey Fusion is a total DVD drive emulator. In fact, you can actually take your DVD drive out if you want, and just load games from the SD card.”
The only problem is this is designed for the Wii so not sure if they are compatible with the gamecube.
Also according to this Cobra Bois that works with the Viper GC mod chip.
support Loading ISOs from Media but does not say much about what kinds of mass storage its supports.

I dont even know what to say...
Re: Building a portable GC: Need options other than DVD
Weeeee......

I have faith that it still works... If so the really tricky part is going to be the cut along (roughly) that red line and reattaching everything there. Fun!

Re: Building a portable GC: Need options other than DVD
wow, awesome. where will you wire up the GC DVD pins? P.S. there's a HEAP of stuff after/on that red line! I know cause I've had to repair some Gamecube that had a trace or two cut there :\

Re: Building a portable GC: Need options other than DVD
I think I may wait on any more board cutting till I know what exactly is going in it.
Re: Building a portable GC: Need options other than DVD
loving it - thanks for sharing this on the forum

Re: Building a portable GC: Need options other than DVD
It's going to be a late night tonight - have a look at what arrived!
P.S. maybe we can get bulk and I'll sell them in the webshop

Wire up the power pins and test it

It should work. Most of that stuff around the controller board area is useless

I just rip off all of the capacitors usually. BUT make sure its a CPU - 20.
Oh, and you can cut more on the left side, FYI. You could cut out those power pins entirely and wire the voltage directly to their hidden layers.
Is your goal to fit it inside a DS case?
EDIT: thats NOT a CPU - 20 board. You cannot remove the silver caps or else you will get a memory card error. Essentially, you cannot cut off any more of the controller board area of that board. Sorry.
Re: Building a portable GC: Need options other than DVD
Sorry in my excitement at finding this yesterday I posted before id reading the whole thing.
Obviously after reading it all I see you are already aware of the sundrive and have already done a lot of testing on it.
But I hope the information on the “WiiKey Fusion mod chip” and its DVD emulation capability is useful to you.
http://www.modchipstore.com/Wiikey-Fusi ... 16480.html
Also found today someone else that done some similar work on DVD Emulation for the gamecube.
http://forums.nintendo-scene.com/index.php?topic=1322.0
You guys have done some amazing stuff here way beyond my technical comprehension.
How close do you think you are to a working potable Gamecube prototype?
Also if can get it to work with some kind of flash media to store the game images how small do you think you can get it?

Yes, a cut down GC mainboard, missing the two EXI ports and the DVD port.

Re: Building a portable GC: Need options other than DVD
Cut board looks sweet. I have cut up many gamecube board before and know that cutting up the controller side is a very finicky thing to do.
Please prove me wrong and cut it so small that it would fit inside that ds lite
If that new modchip would also allow sd card loading without a discdrive attached..... That would just be insane!!!
Wonder when that chip is coming out though and how good the iso loading support is for it. Even if it's gonna work on a gamecube.

i think he means this project as new modchip.
Re: Building a portable GC: Need options other than DVD
That would be amazing if you could get it anywhere near the size of the DS.
Maybe just borrow the front using its screen and some of its buttons?
I loved the feel and shape of the first Gameboy Advanced and the Micro.
But was ready disappointed with the DS.
I wanted it to be a next Gen Gameboy like the PSP put play Gamecube style games!
But if you guys could pull this off it would like you made the next Gen Gameboy id always hoped for!
Maybe your all get jobs working for Nintendo making the next official version

Re: Building a portable GC: Need options other than DVD
The topic is "building a portable gamecube". My worklog will stay hereemu_kidid wrote:loving it - thanks for sharing this on the forum

That is so freakin awesome man. I cant wait to see if the WODE gives different results than the sundriver. If by chance you have a Wii DD laying around would you mind testing that also and report results with DD ID. Getting a bulk order and selling them on the GC-Forever shop would make life easier for anyone who wants to do this for sure. Thx emu!emu_kidid wrote:It's going to be a late night tonight - have a look at what arrived!

Edit: Also, by the time we finish with all this testing I may have about a dozen or so Wii/GC modchips for you to put on the webstore... lol
I'm being conservative for now. This is my first board cut so I don't expect things to go 100% smooth. If when I wire it up it still works I'll trim a bit more... Maybe. The DS was just put there for a easy size comparison. From what you say though, with the right MB you could potentially fit a GC mobo in a DS. Now that would be epic.Tchay wrote:Wire up the power pins and test it![]()

Thx zen! Lets hope the WODE or the wiikey fusion provides us with DD'less loading. They are our last options for it now.zenloc wrote:Cut board looks sweet. I have cut up many gamecube board before and know that cutting up the controller side is a very finicky thing to do.

Re: Building a portable GC: Need options other than DVD
oops made a little mistake... Thought the wiikey fusion wasn't out yet... But it is
Gonna order one right now! See if it works on the gamecube.
Also connected my usa wii drive same model as Ashen to my usa gamecube and it indeed works!
Altough I didn't use the slide mechanism. I has a slimed downed drive with a normal switch for the eject button.
I'll take some pics whenever I get some time.

Re: Building a portable GC: Need options other than DVD
Thats great Zen! love to see some pics
I've contacted the Wiikey guys to see if they will provide any insight as to whether or not the Wiikey fusion may work hooked up to the GC. I don't really want to waste anymore money until we know something works. I already have 4 sundrivers sitting here and when I contacted the sun team they weren't much help at all.

Re: Building a portable GC: Need options other than DVD
I have a few bucks to burn. I ordered a wiikey fusion and a standard wii sun drive modchip. I wonder if the chip will work when using the wiidrive to play backups.
We will just have to see when I get everything in. I'll post any usefull info here when I have it.
Thanks emu_kidd and ashen for burning up the gamecube scene!!

Re: Building a portable GC: Need options other than DVD
Zen and tchay, few question about board cutting:
1. The 4 separate layers of the board are much closer together than I expected... Do I need to worry at all after cutting about the layers "bridging" together? I went all around the perimeter of the cut area with sandpaper as much as I could but I'm still worried.
2. Can I solder directly to the via's without modification? Or do I have to sand the board down first around the via's I want to solder to?
