GC Mainboard trim question
GC Mainboard trim question
Just curious if the area covered in yellow is safe to cut? is it just making for a better GND connection or something else?

Re: GC Mainboard trim question
You can cut all the way back to the red lines in that pic and the GC will still work.
Re: GC Mainboard trim question
another question, trim related but not quite mainboard
Can I trim the heatsink using a standard dremel with the normal cutting discs? has anyone tried it, will sparks fly everywhere, cutting discs shatter and explode?
I don't want to trim the base, just a few "fins" will need to be shortened

Re: GC Mainboard trim question
you can do it with a dremel, but it might not be very easy or go very smoothly. Someone on the benheck or modretro forums showed a method where they scored the fins with an exact-o knife and then broke them off.
I have around 12 of these if you'd like one or two, I can ship along with your adapters. They are 1cm even height:

Re: GC Mainboard trim question
Have I mentioned that I'm infinitely curious as to what you're up to?
Re: GC Mainboard trim question
whatever I'm up to (which you'll know shortly) - it's 95% done apart from proper cooling
I tried using the N64 heatsinks but they just don't cut it - after 5 mins the cpu was almost as hot as my soldering iron :p
pics soon, I promise

Re: GC Mainboard trim question
Wow! That's awesome man. Lets hope it doesn't take quite so damn long for these to reach you as the other thing I sent...
Re: GC Mainboard trim question
Double post... sorry.
Here's a nice thin cheap fan our man Tchay found that should work quite nicely for our projects. If you're interested that is:

Depending on what you're up to though, you may be able to get away with just sitting the stock GC fan on top of the heatsink.

Re: GC Mainboard trim question
I wasn't thinking on top directly, but perhaps elsewhere with some guiding plastic to flow the air through the heatsink..
