my wii shuts off when the external hardrive is plug in

Post by xGRUMPYx » Fri Sep 02, 2011 7:49 pm

i bought the hdd months ago to use my backups, and yes i do own the originals, i just dont want to use the disc, well my problem is that yesterday when i turn my wii on it immediately shutt off and i thought maybe it was time to buy a new one, but when i unplugged the usb cable from the wii i turn it on and it works, to be more specific the only way to use my hdd is to plug it in when the wii is already on, is it my wii or my hdd?i never drop it or anything, can it be because the cable that goes on to the outlet is sending to much juice on to the hdd?

Is it a 2,5" or a 3,5" HDD? The big ones need an external power supply and some of the smaller ones too. Sometimes they have a Y-USB cable.
If your HDD needs too much current, then your Wii might behave this way.

its a 2.5, well i replace my hardrive with a new enclousure because the other one was damage from the usb port, the new enclousure requires the power supply to be use, the old hardrive case was only a usb port without the outlet ect... what do u recommend doing? i mean is no big deal though i just dont want to unplug it from the outlet and plug it back in lol. my wii reads the hdd fine btw

UPDATE: MY WII ALL OF A SUDDEN DONT READ DISC ANYMORE, WHEN I PUT THE DISC THE DISC ICON ON THE DISC CHANNEL SPINS THEN THAT MESSAGE POPS OUT, MAYBE MY WII IS DYING? OR THE DVD DRIVE NEEDS TO BE REPLACE?

I don't know much about the Wii. From what I read, it sounded like your USB HDD was maybe shorting the +5V power rail. The Wii shutted down as a protective measure. You're saying you replaced the enclosure because the USB connector was damaged on it. Maybe that was the source of the short-circuit.

If you tried multiple time to plug your faulty USB HDD enclosure and the system shut down, it may be possible that permanent damage was done to other internal components, like the DVD drive.

Is the Wii working on the principle that the DVD drive motor runs on +12V and parts of the logic board runs on +5V?

If you are confortable opening your Wii you could take the DVD drive logic board and look for a blown fuse or any damaged component near the power input.

As I said I'm no experts but if I had any console that had these kind of problems, that would be the first thing I'd do.

sorry i didnt keep you guys updated, already fix my problem a month ago, Well the dvd drive was working fine all along, Lol I Dissamble The wii And It Had A Small Piece of Metal On The Laser!! Lol What A Relief! But Im Still Curious How It Got There, Maybe My Little Niece Was Messing With It, Also The Enclosure Was The Problem As Well, I Bought A New One Friday And It Should Come Any Day Now, This One Doesnt Required A Power Supply, Well Thanks Everyone!
