Custom QSB for Wasp/WKF with DVD drive
I have created a couple QSBs to help the ease of install a wasp while retaining dvd + audio stream support.
Here are both QSB Installeds. My Wasp has firmware 1.0 so it has autoboot. This is why Pin29 is grounded. The lid switch is currently bridgde so the Wasp thinks the lid is closed. I will eventually unbridge this and connect to the real lid switch on the cube. The wasp is powered by small 3.3 voltage regulator (digikey part # 296-15819-1-ND http://www.digikey.com/product-detail/e ... -ND/604361) This keeps the install pretty clean, you can however not install this VREG and power the wasp by pulling 3.3v from anywhere on the cube and running that to the 3.3v pad on the host QSB.
Close up, To install the Host QSB you will have to move all but one of the DVD filters. This simulates the trace cutting as well.
This is how the wasp lays down. Make sure it clears the heat sink standoffs. These are the only length cables I had but you could use longer cables and move the wasp down to a different location. Put something over the top of the wasp to to isolate it from shorting out.
You will have to make some cuts on the metal case to fit
Thats pretty much the install. Put everything back together.
Here are the two OSH Park links:
WKF/Wasp Host QSB 2.3
https://oshpark.com/shared_projects/3oHakCFx
WKF/Wasp DVD QSB 1.4
https://oshpark.com/shared_projects/NIwAEeNW
I have been using the standard Osh Park thickness on these.
Thanks for reading

Those are looking very nice, good job. I already have a megadrive v3and v5 so it is no pressing matter for me to test them immediately. Maybe somewhere in the future.
Will keep an eye on your thead over at assemblergames
Oh, and welcome to the boards.

Wow, that is a simple but awesome solution to just remove and bypass the DVD-drive filters on the GC motherboard.
I have not seen anybody else yet installing the WASP/WKF to the cube while still being able to play discs ... ok, besides the megadrive V4. But it is not available anymore.

Re: Custom QSB for Wasp/WKF with DVD drive
I found your OSH Park file, and came across this post while looking for it's creator. That's a fantastic idea, and I've always wanted to install a wasp without losing DVD suport!
My only question is: Where did you find those ribbon cable connectors? If you could send me a link for purchase, or the model, it would be greatly apreciated!

Re: Custom QSB for Wasp/WKF with DVD drive
Any .5mm pitch 32 pin flex connector will do.
Re: Custom QSB for Wasp/WKF with DVD drive
Thanks bud! Found them easily on Ebay, and quite cheap too!Streetwalker wrote:Any .5mm pitch 32 pin flex connector will do.
Next step is finding the Wasp Fusion itself.
Tried to find somewhere to buy it but couldn't, it's sold out everywhere!
Does anyone know a place that still sells them?

I was getting mine from here: https://www.aliexpress.com/item/WASP-Fu ... 0.0.xaYTcd
But they appear to be sold out/gone. Maybe I'll build clone. I'll see if I can get a hold of the some chips and design a board up.
Re: Custom QSB for Wasp/WKF with DVD drive
I was wondering if making an exact clone would be better than making something designed with the Gamecube in mind, maybe something that combine both your boards in the design, ignoring the whole ribbon cable thing. Dunno, just an idea. xD

As far as I know this thing uses anti-copy/piracy protection built into the FPGA to prevent you from simply cloning it.citrus3000psi wrote:Sugurain wrote:Thanks bud! Found them easily on Ebay, and quite cheap too!Streetwalker wrote:Any .5mm pitch 32 pin flex connector will do.

Yeah, Actel FPGAs have bitstream encryption, and your only chance to extract the key is to decap the chip. China could do it, you probably can't.

Re: Custom QSB for Wasp/WKF with DVD drive
I didn't think I'd need to decrypt anything.
The WKF firmware and menu are available for download. I figured I'd just flash the firmware But I guess that different from whats on the FPGA

Re: Custom QSB for Wasp/WKF with DVD drive
The FPGA has internal flash that you can't dump without decapping, it is unknown whether the contents are in the firmware update and the update itself seems to be encrypted anyway. No key = no clones.
Re: Custom QSB for Wasp/WKF with DVD drive
Also, I wantes to ask why you need to connect 3.3V on the board (or install the voltage regulator in the other), as I remember the Wasp would work fine with anything up to 5V...
Re: Custom QSB for Wasp/WKF with DVD drive
Nope, you'll just fry your fpga.
Re: Custom QSB for Wasp/WKF with DVD drive
Well, bought my Wiikey Fusion!
Also gonna order the boards on Osh Park soon.
My final question is: did you use normal cables and connectors on the boards, or did you something like reverse cables, or connectors with top contact?

Re: Custom QSB for Wasp/WKF with DVD drive
Never mind, by the picture is a normal ribbon cable and botton contact connector. heheh
I'll need another ribbon cable to connect everything right? (the Wiikey comes with one)
What's the approximate length of the cable I need to buy? It will take 1-2 months for my wiikey to arrive, and I want to have the correct cable in hands when it arrives.

It will work with multiple sizes. Just depends where you want the WK to fit.Sugurain wrote:Never mind, by the picture is a normal ribbon cable and botton contact connector. heheh

I also have created a board to mount an micro sd.

without creating an account there - can somebody tell me how much these are?
and besides that - great job on that citrus! is the microsd board just an extension of the wiikey sd?

All the boards and parts will be around 20 usd. I'm not sure what you mean by extension, but it replaces the big ugly white box that comes with the wiikey.

yeah like that. cheers!citrus3000psi wrote:liquitt wrote:without creating an account there - can somebody tell me how much these are?

Re: Custom QSB for Wasp/WKF with DVD drive
Well, my Wiikey Fusion and boards arrived! Just waiting for the extra ribbon cable and the connectors now, can't wait!
Just saw that you made a board for the micro SD too, now I want that aswell. lol
I'd like to see a picture of the board after being completed, and how exactly it gets fixed in the GC's shell.

Hello,
Thank you to share your work.
I have a TPS73633DBVR regulator instead of TPS73633DBVT. Is that also work?

Thank you for your answer.
Have you got a tips to solder the WKF Host QSB? I tried, I find it's difficult.
