WIP - DIY GC Component Cable

Post by Ashen » Thu Oct 18, 2012 10:41 pm

So I've had plans to do this for a while, as I'm 95% sure its possible to do. I made a start today by pinning out the Wii's A/V Chip. I need to measure all the tiny components still and add values for them, if only for the sake of being thorough. There are only 2 pins on the chip that I'm unsure at this point where they go or what they do, but I'm pretty sure they're unused pins (or ideally, hidden H/V sync pins). I'll know better when I remove the chip and sand the board down.

Anyway, here's what I've got so far (I'll attach the paint.net file also):

Its not super pretty I know, but it gets the job done. There are just as many input traces on the Wii from the GPU to the A/V chip as there are on the GC to its A/V chip. I/We just need to figure out which signals are which.

Anyone who wants to join the fun is more than welcome. :D

Interesting information, since I'm still in the need of a GC-component solution.

Forgive my ignorance, but what is the goal of your project :)? Assembling a GC component cable from Wii parts?

Yep, seeing as how you can get a "broken" Wii on e-bay for $20 or less and a working one for a little more. That's still a fraction of the price of an official component cable. Plus, this is for a bit of fun and tinkering.

The chip needs to be configured through an I²C bus.

I have no idea what you mean, feel free to enlighten me. Why would the chip need to be configured at all? Shouldn't a chip already attached and working in a Wii already be configured?

Is the Wii's AVE responsible for video output type based on the selected video type information it receives from the WII on screen menu configuration?

Pretty sure you can't use this chip without it being configured as Extrems mentioned, meaning it can't be used in a GameCube.. http://wiibrew.org/wiki/Hardware/AV_Encoder

Isn´t it possible to clone the MX Chip?

Don´t know much about it, but some chips are programmed... so isnt´t it possibly to read the code an flash to an onther chip?

Like we can do for the diy IDE-Exi?
(change pinout,...)
