GC Inside a PC (Board Rewiring and Wii DVD Drive Idea)

Post by Twilly » Tue Sep 27, 2016 7:31 am

First time poster here, long time lurker. Out of the off chance this is even possible (time commitment and difficulty not be an issue, unless this is literally impossible without knowledge of something difficult to access such as direct knowledge of the GC pcb design or the like); I was wondering to do this mod, and was wondering if anyone has any links to articles, information, critique/constructive criticism on the idea (Not practical at all but something i have been wanting to do).

Essentially what I wish to do is to put a Gamecube, with the BBA, GB Player, a Qoob Pro Mod-chip, and if possible (replace the traditional GC top disc drive, with a Wii styled front loading drive); and shove the entire mess into a custom build pc case's (already sorta conceptually designed) 5.25" bays (if this is probable it would most likely be 2 or 3 5.25" bays.

The case is designed with traditional PC expansion slots in the rear in mind, so what I am intending to do is:
-Place a Wii front loading disc drive, 2x memory card slots, and game boy player adapter, and place them in their own enclosed 2-3 5.25" bays (possibly shove (if WII styled disc drive) and memory cards in one 5.25" , main board in another, and GC Player/bottom connectors in the lower 5.25" bay.
-rewire power and video out to a PC back-plate expansion style port to plug directly into wall/monitor
-rewire GC expansion port with BBA plugged in to port to the same slot back-plate as video/power
-Have the Qoob pro setup as standard, BUT have the chip's USB connector to be directly plugged into a mini USB-USB bridge, which would lead a single wire to a motherboard internal USB port.

Anyways, the entire project seems like a rewiring train wreck, but would save some space than having my GC be on my table near my monitor (I know they're pretty small, but I have bad OCD :P )

,Please add any inputs or criticism, thank you :D

Wouldn't this make the whole thing bigger than the actual gamecube is? Don't get me wrong, the idea of a custom gamecube pc case sounds nice, but can't see how it will save space over just using a gamecube itself...

I think he wants to build the GC into his actual working PC, to have both in the same case.

You could probably do it in 2x5.25 bays with a Wii drive...

Top 5.25 layer:
Use something like a Megadrive v3/5/6 and use a Wii DVD Drive instead of a WASP
Bottom 5.25 layer:
Upside down GC mainboard so that the BBA and GBP can plug in without modification and so you can mount a huge 120mm (but low rpm) fan on the heatsink to cool the thing.

Well, that would make sense about saving space then.

I actually saw someone just cutting out the space to just plug a gamecube right into the front of the pc. Was looking kinda crappy, but hilarious. Can't wait to see the finished product here.

@Twilly: This might be interesting for you then. Saw it while googling for gamecube in pc stuff because I were looking for the image I mentioned above.

Low rpm = less than 2000. An 80 or 92mm fan should work perfectly fine, just don't skimp on it and get a quality brand like Noctua.
I've replaced the stock fans on my GPU after one died. They were slim 85mm and climbed up to 3000rpm under load and were extremely loud*, with a distinct hum at idle. I've mounted a pair of 25x92mm 1600rpm Noctua fans now, they're basically unhearable at idle, and they make a smooth hum under load, which is entirely covered by in-game audio.
Bottom line: pick quality fans and you won't have to worry about noise.

* All stock GPU fans suck, even on the expensive custom designs, though I bet the shitty blowers on reference designs are even worse.

Thanks for the input!

It will essentially be a glorified version (hopefully) of : http://assemblergames.com/l/threads/my- ... ion.54889/

However, with my own personal modifications and whatnot. Completely forgot MegaDrive existed, so thank you for that! :)
